What you will learn
You can put inte, ofta and också in the right place, and agree with Jag också or Inte jag heller.
One place for six words
Inte, alltid, ofta, ibland, aldrig and också all go in the same place. To find it, look at the verb and the subject.
| Swedish | English |
|---|---|
| Ida dricker inte kaffe. | Ida does not drink coffee. |
| Oskar städar också i dag. | Oskar is cleaning today too. |
| I kväll läser jag inte. | This evening I am not reading. |
| På morgonen dricker vi alltid te. | In the morning we always drink tea. |
| Jobbar du inte i dag? | Are you not working today? |
| Somnar ni ofta sent? | Do you often fall asleep late? |
When the subject comes first, the small word comes right after the verb, as in Ida dricker inte kaffe.
When the verb comes before the subject, the small word comes right after the subject. This happens after a time word, as in I kväll läser jag inte, and in a question, as in Jobbar du inte i dag?
So the verb and the subject come first, in either order, and then the small word. The rule is the same for all six words. Ibland can also come first or last, and också can also come last, as in Oskar städar i dag också.
Me too and me neither
| Swedish | English |
|---|---|
| Jag är trött. Jag också. | I am tired. Me too. |
| Jag tränar aldrig på söndagar. Inte jag heller. | I never exercise on Sundays. Me neither. |
| Viktor jobbar inte i dag. Ingrid jobbar inte heller. | Viktor is not working today. Ingrid is not working either. |
Jag också agrees with a sentence that says yes. After a sentence with inte or aldrig, agree with Inte jag heller. Heller means either. It comes after a no, usually together with inte.
You will also hear Jag inte heller, and in writing you may see heller inte. This course writes Inte jag heller and inte heller.
