Chapter 4, lesson 33

This One, That One and Which One

Point to things with den här and den där, show someone or something with det här är, and ask which one with vilken, vilket and vilka.

What you will learn

You can point to things with den här and den där, and ask which one with vilken, vilket and vilka.

This and that

With an en-wordWith an ett-wordMore than one
this, theseden här koppendet här glasetde här
that, thoseden där koppendet där glasetde där

Den här means this, and den där means that. Use den with an en-word and det with an ett-word, just as with den and det for it. The noun after them takes the ending for the, so den här koppen and det där glaset.

De här and de där mean these and those. In this lesson they stand on their own, as in Jag tar de här. With a noun after them, the noun needs a plural ending for the, which comes in chapter 8.

SwedishEnglish
Den här jackan är fin. This jacket is nice.
Det där äpplet är rött.That apple is red.
Hur mycket kostar den där lampan? How much is that lamp?
De här är billiga. These are cheap.
Jag tar den här.I’ll take this one.

When everyone can see which thing you mean, den här, det här, den där and det där can also stand alone, as in Jag tar den här.

Det här är

To show or present something or someone, say Det här är and then the thing or the person. In this phrase det här stays the same for an en-word, an ett-word and a plural.

SwedishEnglish
Det här är Greta. This is Greta.
Det här är min cykel. This is my bike.
Det här är mina böcker. These are my books.

Which one

SwedishEnglishUse
Vilken kopp?Which cup?en-word
Vilket glas?Which glass?ett-word
Vilka blommor?Which flowers?plural

The noun after vilken, vilket and vilka has no ending for the. Vilken is a question word, so in a question the verb comes right after vilken and its noun.

SwedishEnglish
Vilken jacka vill du ha?Which jacket do you want?
Den där.That one.
Vilket kort har du?Which card do you have?
Vilka tomater är billiga?Which tomatoes are cheap?

Den där answers a question about a jacket, because jacka is an en-word.
