What you will learn
You can understand and say prices in kronor, and read and write the numbers up to 1000.
The hundreds
| Number | Swedish | Number | Swedish |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | hundra | 600 | sexhundra |
| 200 | tvåhundra | 700 | sjuhundra |
| 300 | trehundra | 800 | åttahundra |
| 400 | fyrahundra | 900 | niohundra |
| 500 | femhundra | 1000 | tusen |
Put the small number in front of hundra, so tre and hundra make trehundra. For 100 you can say hundra or etthundra, and for 1000 you can say tusen or ettusen. Both are correct. This course writes hundra and tusen.
Numbers between the hundreds
Say the hundreds first and then the rest, the way you already say the numbers up to 100. Write it all as one word.
| Number | Swedish | How it is built |
|---|---|---|
| 120 | hundratjugo | hundra and tjugo |
| 245 | tvåhundrafyrtiofem | tvåhundra, fyrtio and fem |
| 380 | trehundraåttio | trehundra and åttio |
| 506 | femhundrasex | femhundra and sex |
| 999 | niohundranittionio | niohundra, nittio and nio |
The words get long, but every part is a number you know. Read them in parts, hundreds first. English often says two hundred and forty five, but Swedish has no word for and inside a number.
Kronor
The money in Sweden is the krona. One is en krona, because krona is an en-word. Two or more are kronor. In writing, a price often has kr after the number. You still say the whole word, krona or kronor.
| Written | Said | English |
|---|---|---|
| 1 kr | en krona | one krona |
| 45 kr | fyrtiofem kronor | 45 kronor |
| 120 kr | hundratjugo kronor | 120 kronor |
| 999 kr | niohundranittionio kronor | 999 kronor |
Kronor is the plural of krona. The next lesson shows how the plural works for other nouns.
Asking and saying the price
| Swedish | English |
|---|---|
| Hur mycket kostar tröjan? | How much is the jumper? |
| Den kostar trehundra kronor. | It costs 300 kronor. |
| Hur mycket kostar äpplet? | How much is the apple? |
| Det kostar fem kronor. | It costs five kronor. |
| Det blir hundrafyrtio kronor. | That comes to 140 kronor. |
Hur mycket kostar …? asks for a price. Kostar is the present form of kosta, to cost. You will also hear Vad kostar …? with the same meaning.
In the answer, den is for an en-word and det is for an ett-word, as you learned for it. You will also often hear Det kostar … about any kind of thing.
Det blir … is what the person at the till says when they tell you the total for everything you buy.
Paying
| Swedish | English |
|---|---|
| Ida köper en bok. | Ida buys a book. |
| Jag betalar med kort. | I pay by card. |
| Oskar betalar kontant. | Oskar pays in cash. |
| Här är kvittot. | Here is the receipt. |
Köper and betalar are present forms, like the verbs you already know. Med kort means by card, and kontant means in cash.
