What you will learn
You can ask how many and how much, say how many times you do something, and ask what kind of thing something is.
Many, much and a little
| Swedish | English |
|---|---|
| Hur många äpplen köper du? | How many apples are you buying? |
| Vi har många koppar. | We have many cups. |
| Hur mycket vatten dricker du? | How much water do you drink? |
| Jag dricker mycket vatten. | I drink a lot of water. |
| Kan jag få lite mjölk? | Can I have a little milk? |
Use många with things you can count, and put the noun in the plural, as in många koppar. Use mycket with things you do not count, such as vatten, mjölk, socker and mat. Lite, a little, also goes with things you do not count.
Hur mycket kostar …? from the first lesson of this chapter works the same way. It asks how much money. Before an adjective, mycket still means very, as in mycket dyr.
Times and kinds
| Swedish | English |
|---|---|
| Jag bakar en gång i veckan. | I bake once a week. |
| Vi städar två gånger i veckan. | We clean twice a week. |
| Hur många gånger i veckan läser du? | How many times a week do you study? |
| Vad är det för bröd? | What kind of bread is it? |
| Vad har du för cykel? | What kind of bike do you have? |
En gång is one time, once. After two or more it is gånger. In två gånger i veckan, i means a or per.
Vad är det för …? asks what kind of thing something is, and Vad har du för …? asks what kind someone has. The noun usually comes right after för, with no en or ett.
