What you will learn
You can compare two things with -are and än, and say which one is the cheapest or the best.
Comparing
| Swedish | English |
|---|---|
| Tröjan är billigare än jackan. | The sweater is cheaper than the jacket. |
| Ida är äldre än Viktor. | Ida is older than Viktor. |
| Huset är större än lägenheten. | The house is bigger than the flat. |
| I dag är det kallare än i går. | Today it is colder than yesterday. |
| Den här jackan är varmast. | This jacket is the warmest. |
| Vilken cykel är nyast? | Which bike is the newest? |
| Kanelbullarna på Kafé Lyktan är bäst. | The cinnamon buns at Kafé Lyktan are the best. |
To compare two things, add -are to the adjective and use än for than. After än comes a noun or a name, as in än jackan and än Viktor. The -are form is the same for every noun, so Tröjan är billigare and Huset är billigare.
For the most of all, add -ast, as in varmast and billigast. In this course the -ast form comes after är, as in Den här jackan är varmast. Saying the warmest jacket in one phrase comes later.
