What you will learn
You can say what there is in a home with det finns, say where things are and use den or det for it.
There is and there are
Det finns means there is or there are. It says that something is in a place. The noun after it has no definite ending, so it comes with en, ett or a number, as in en stol or tre sovrum.
| Swedish | English |
|---|---|
| Det finns ett bord och en stol i köket. | There is a table and a chair in the kitchen. |
| Det finns tre sovrum i huset. | There are three bedrooms in the house. |
| Finns det en balkong? | Is there a balcony? |
| Ja, det finns en balkong. | Yes, there is a balcony. |
| Vad finns det i väskan? | What is there in the bag? |
In a yes or no question, finns comes first. After vad, the order is the same as in Vad heter du?
Det finns or det är
Det finns tells that something is in a place. Det är points something out or says what it is.
| Swedish | English |
|---|---|
| Det finns en katt i köket. | There is a cat in the kitchen. |
| Det är min katt. | It is my cat. |
In speech you may also hear det är for there is, but det finns is the safe choice.
Where is it
Answer Var är …? with a small place word.
| Place word | Example | In English |
|---|---|---|
| i | Mobilen är i väskan. | The phone is in the bag. |
| på | Boken är på stolen. | The book is on the chair. |
| under | Hunden är under bordet. | The dog is under the table. |
| bredvid | Lampan är bredvid sängen. | The lamp is next to the bed. |
| framför | Cykeln är framför dörren. | The bike is in front of the door. |
| bakom | Väskan är bakom soffan. | The bag is behind the sofa. |
After a place word, a thing that both people know about has the definite form, as in på bordet. In this chapter, a statement about where something is starts with the subject, as in Boken är på stolen.
Here, there and at home
| Swedish | English |
|---|---|
| Nyckeln är här. | The key is here. |
| Min jacka är där. | My jacket is there. |
| Är Marta hemma? Nej, hon är inte hemma. | Is Marta at home? No, she is not at home. |
| Jag letar efter min mobil. | I am looking for my phone. |
| Jag hittar inte nyckeln. | I cannot find the key. |
It with den or det
For a thing that is already named, it is den for an en-word and det for an ett-word. For a person, use han, hon or hen as before.
| Swedish | English |
|---|---|
| Var är jackan? Den är i hallen. | Where is the jacket? It is in the hall. |
| Var är fotot? Det är i väskan. | Where is the photo? It is in the bag. |
When you point something out, use det for every noun, as in Det är min katt and Det är ett foto.
