What you will learn
You can say how you feel and where it hurts, understand how often to take a tablet and wish someone a quick recovery.
Where it hurts
| Swedish | English |
|---|---|
| Jag har ont i huvudet. | I have a headache. |
| Ida har ont i magen. | Ida has a stomachache. |
| Har du ont i halsen? | Do you have a sore throat? |
| Jonas har ont i ryggen. | Jonas has a backache. |
| Kenji har ont i foten. | Kenji’s foot hurts. |
| Var har du ont? | Where does it hurt? |
Ha ont i means to have a pain in a part of the body. The body word after ont i takes the definite form, as in huvudet, magen and halsen. English says my head or her foot, but Swedish says Jag har ont i huvudet and Hon har ont i foten. The vocabulary page shows every body word with its four forms, for example ett ben, benet, ben and benen.
Ill, and at the health center
| Swedish | English |
|---|---|
| Jag mår inte bra. | I do not feel well. |
| Marta är förkyld och hostar. | Marta has a cold and is coughing. |
| Viktor har feber. | Viktor has a fever. |
| Jag var sjuk i går. | I was ill yesterday. |
| När blev du sjuk? | When did you get ill? |
| Jag ska gå till vårdcentralen. | I am going to the health center. |
| Ta en tablett två gånger om dagen. | Take a tablet twice a day. |
| Krya på dig! | Get well soon! |
Förkyld is an adjective, so it comes after är, and it takes the endings you know, as in Vi är förkylda. Feber comes without en in Jag har feber. For an illness that is over, use the past, as in Jag var sjuk i går. Blev sjuk means got ill.
En vårdcentral is the local health center, where you see a doctor or a nurse. Två gånger om dagen means twice a day. Swedish says om dagen, but i veckan, as in två gånger i veckan. Krya på dig! is a fixed phrase that you say or write to someone who is ill.
