Chapter 5, lesson 38

Places in Town

The Swedish words for places in town, the small word i, på or vid that goes with each one, and how to ask where a place is with var ligger and say that it is near or far.

What you will learn

You can ask where a place in town is and understand the answer. You also learn the small word that goes with each place, and the words vid, nära and långt.

Places in town

WordDefinite formBeing thereEnglish
en stationstationenpå stationena station
ett torgtorgetpå torgeta square

en simhallsimhalleni simhallena swimming pool
ett hotellhotelletpå hotelleta hotel
en restaurangrestaurangenpå restaurangena restaurant
en hållplatshållplatsenvid hållplatsena bus stop
ett hörnhörnetvid hörneta corner

Learn each place together with its small word. Swedish says på stationen and på torget, but i parken and i centrum. There is no short rule for this.

A few places take both words, such as i or på biblioteket and i or på simhallen. You will also hear på hörnet and på hållplatsen. Centrum is used without en or ett, as in i centrum.

Where is it

SwedishEnglish
Var ligger stationen?Where is the station?
Den ligger nära torget. It is near the square.
Var ligger apoteket?Where is the chemist’s?
Det ligger vid hörnet. It is on the corner.
Är det långt?Is it far?
Nej, det är nära.No, it is close.

Ligger usually means lies, but in Var ligger …? it asks where a building or a place is. Var är stationen? is also correct.

In the answer, use den for an en-word and det for an ett-word. Stationen is an en-word, so den ligger. Apoteket is an ett-word, so det ligger.

Use ligger for buildings and places, not for people. To ask where a person is, use är, as in Var är Oskar? Han är på stationen.

By, near and far

SwedishEnglish
Hotellet ligger vid torget. The hotel is by the square.
Apoteket ligger nära sjukhuset. The chemist’s is near the hospital.
Det är långt till Gävle. It is a long way to Gävle.

Vid means by or at, right next to a place. Nära means near or close, and it does not add -t or -a like stor, stort and stora. Långt means far. Det är nära and Det är inte långt both tell you that a place is close.
