Months, Dates and Birthdays

What you will learn

You can name the months, say a date such as den tredje maj, and ask and answer when someone has a birthday.

The months

Months are written with a small letter, like the days. In a month is i, as in i maj. En månad is a month.

Dates

A date has den, an ordinal and the month, as in den tredje maj. In writing, it is often den 3 maj. You know the ordinals up to tionde. These come after it.

Elfte and tolfte are written with f. From tjugonde on, the last part is an ordinal you know, so tjugoförsta, tjugoandra and trettioförsta.

Birthdays

Fylla år means to have a birthday. With an age, it means to turn, as in Viktor fyller sju år i januari. Född means born, and Swedish says är född, as in Jag är född i Osaka. A year is said in hundreds, so 1995 is nittonhundranittiofem. Years after 2000 are said in two ways, so this course writes years in digits.

Two holidays

Jul is Christmas, in December, and people say God jul! Midsommar is a summer holiday in June, on a Friday and a Saturday. People say Glad midsommar!, and at Midsummer is på midsommar. Fira means to celebrate, as in Vi firar midsommar hos farmor.
