A cube with side cm holds cubic centimeters, and one with side cm holds . Doubling the side multiplies the volume by eight, and that rapid growth is the whole personality of a power function. Small exponents and large ones, even ones and odd ones, all follow a few simple rules about sign, symmetry and size that you can read straight off the formula.
Key terms
Integer-power function
Definition An integer-power function, in this lesson, is a function of the form
where is a fixed positive integer. Here means multiplied by itself times, so it is defined for every real , including negative and . The exponent and negative exponents are not part of this family. The function is the constant away from , and is the reciprocal function, which has its own lesson.
In plain words Pick a whole number and raise the input to that power. The cases , and give the line , the parabola and the cubic .
Example For the values at , , , and are , , , and . The sign of the output matches the sign of the input, and the outputs grow fast once .
Cubic function
Definition A cubic function is a polynomial function of degree ,
with real coefficients , , and . Its domain is all real numbers. The simplest one, , is the parent cubic.
In plain words A cubic is any formula whose highest power of is . Far to the right and far to the left its outputs go in opposite directions. For large the term outweighs the others, and has the sign of .
Example To sketch , factor first.
The zeros are , and . Counting negative factors tells you the sign between them, and a few values confirm it.
So the graph comes up from below, crosses at , rises above the axis, comes back down through the origin, dips below the axis, and climbs back up through the axis at . A table cannot show exactly where the turns are. Finding those needs derivatives later.
Even power
Definition If is an even positive integer, then for every real
with only at . The reason is that an even number of negative factors multiply to a positive number. For even and with , higher even powers are smaller, and for they are larger.
In plain words An even power wipes out the sign of the input. The graphs of , and are U shapes with their lowest point at the origin. The higher the power, the flatter the bottom between and and the steeper the sides beyond them.
Example Compare and . Their difference factors as
For this is negative, so . For it is positive, so . The graphs meet only at , and .
The same values appear at , and . Near the origin hugs the axis more closely, and past it shoots up faster.
Odd power
Definition If is an odd positive integer, then for every real
so has the same sign as . Moreover, for every real number there is exactly one real with , called the real th root of .
In plain words An odd power keeps the sign of the input. The graphs of , and run from the lower left, through the origin, to the upper right.
Example The equation has the single real solution , since and no other real number cubes to . By contrast, the even power equation has two real solutions, and , and has none.
Symmetry
Definition A function whose domain contains whenever it contains is called even if for every in its domain, and odd if for every in its domain. The graph of an even function is symmetric about the axis. The graph of an odd function is symmetric about the origin, meaning is on the graph exactly when is. Most functions are neither even nor odd.
In plain words An even graph is its own mirror image across the axis. An odd graph looks the same after a half turn about the origin. So is even when is even and odd when is odd, which is where the names come from.
Example The function from above is odd, because
That matches the table, where and . The function is neither, since while , which equals neither nor .
Increasing function
Definition A function is increasing on an interval if whenever and are in with . It is decreasing on if whenever in . The function is increasing on all of . To see it, take and factor.
The first factor is positive. Completing the square gives
which is positive unless , and that is impossible when . So . The same holds for every odd power. An even power is decreasing on and increasing on .
In plain words Increasing means the graph always goes up as you move right. The cube curve never turns back, even though it flattens out near the origin.
Example Take and . Then , as the rule says. For the same inputs give and , so the order flips, which shows that is not increasing on any interval that contains both negative and positive numbers.
Domain and range
Definition For every positive integer the domain of is . If is odd, the range is , because each real is the output at its real th root. If is even, the range is , because every output is nonnegative and each is the output at , the nonnegative th root.
In plain words Every real number can go into a power function. An odd power can produce any real number, while an even power produces exactly the numbers that are zero or positive.
Example The function has domain . Since takes every value in , the outputs of fill , with the smallest value at . The output is reached at and .

- Decide whether is even, odd or neither, and find and .
Show the answer
It is odd, because . The values are and .
- Which is larger, or ? Which is larger, or ?
Show the answer
For an input between and more factors make the product smaller, so is larger than . Above the order reverses, and is larger than .
- Find the range of and the input that gives the output .
Show the answer
The cube takes every real value, so the range is . Setting gives , so and . It is the only solution because cubing is increasing.
