What you will learn
You can describe people, things and plans with är and an adjective, ask what something is like with Hur är …? and say that something is fun or hard to do.
The adjective fits the subject
| Swedish | English |
|---|---|
| Hugo är trevlig. | Hugo is nice. |
| Kursen är intressant. | The course is interesting. |
| Huset är stort. | The house is big. |
| Vi är lediga i helgen. | We are free this weekend. |
| Ni är välkomna! | You are all welcome! |
| Marta och Jonas är glada. | Marta and Jonas are happy. |
After är, the adjective takes the ending that fits the subject, just as before a noun. One person or an en-word takes the plain form. An ett-word takes -t. Two or more take -a, so the plural form comes after vi, ni and de, and after two names joined with och. To one person you say Du är välkommen, and to two or more Ni är välkomna.
Lätt and intressant already end in t, so their ett form looks the same, as in Det är lätt.
What is it like
| Question | Answer | English |
|---|---|---|
| Hur är kursen? | Den är rolig. | What is the course like? It is fun. |
| Hur är lägenheten? | Den är liten men fin. | What is the flat like? It is small but nice. |
| Hur är filmen? | Den är lite svår. | What is the film like? It is a little difficult. |
Hur är …? asks what something is like. Hur mår du? is different, because it asks how someone feels.
Fun or hard to do
| Swedish | English |
|---|---|
| Det är roligt att simma. | It is fun to swim. |
| Det är svårt att baka bröd. | It is hard to bake bread. |
| Det är kul att träffa nya vänner. | It is fun to meet new friends. |
Det är, an adjective, att and a verb say what it is like to do something. The adjective takes the ett form, as in roligt and svårt, and kul never changes. You already know Trevligt att träffas!, which is built the same way.
