Why the date matters now
Extra tillagg is easy to miss because it is not the ordinary studiebidrag that schools normally trigger. It is a separate paper application for a family-income-tested grant, and the last date for the 2025/2026 school year is the last day of June.
The deadline also lands after much of the school year is already behind the student. That makes the practical work less about planning the autumn and more about checking whether the family can still document the income period that CSN asks for.
Who may be affected
This can matter for a student on gymnasium-level studies in Sweden when the family income is low. CSN says the grant can be paid for studies such as gymnasium, folkhogskola, and many other education programs that give the right to extra tillagg.
Age also matters. CSN says a student can receive extra tillagg at most through the first half of the year the student turns 20. Foreign citizens may have separate conditions for Swedish study support.
Eligibility basics to check
- Responsible agency: CSN handles the application and pays the grant.
- Income limit: family income has to be lower than SEK 125,000 before tax during the 1 July-30 June income period.
- For the live school year: for 2025/2026, CSN counts income from 1 July 2025 through 30 June 2026.
- Full-time study: the student has to study full time on an education that gives the right to the grant.
- Assets: if family assets are above SEK 75,000, CSN counts one fifth of the excess into the income test.
How much the grant can be
CSN's 2025/2026 table gives three monthly levels. Families with income below SEK 85,000 can qualify for SEK 855 per month. Income from SEK 85,000 to SEK 104,999 gives SEK 570 per month, and income from SEK 105,000 to SEK 124,999 gives SEK 285 per month.
The grant is paid for ten months per school year, from September through June, when the student studies full time. If CSN decides after September, the first payment normally comes two weekdays after the decision, and later payments follow the last weekday of the month.
Details worth gathering before sending the form
- the CSN application form for extra tillagg
- pay slips, employer certificates, or payment statements showing taxable income before tax from 1 July 2025 onward
- payment statements for taxable benefits such as sickness benefit, parental benefit, activity support, or taxable omvardnadsbidrag
- municipal social-assistance decisions and norm calculations, if the family has had forsorjningsstod
- the family situation CSN should use when deciding whose income counts
- the right signature: a guardian signs if the student is under 18, while a student over 18 can sign the application personally
Some income is outside the extra-tillagg income calculation. CSN's examples include study aid, student aid, child allowance, maintenance support, housing allowance, social assistance, elder support, and establishment-related payments.
Common traps
The first trap is using the wrong year. For this school year, the relevant income period is 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026, not the calendar year 2026.
The second trap is assuming one parent's income always drops out after a separation. CSN's family-situation table can still count both parents' income in several custody and household situations.
A third trap is forgetting changes after a decision. CSN says changes such as family income, family situation, school ending, or school change should be reported because wrong payments can become repayment claims. CSN also notes that knowingly continuing to receive support without the right to it can lead to a benefit-fraud report.
A nearby support to check at the same time
If the student lives away from home for gymnasium studies, CSN's inackorderingstillagg can be worth checking separately. It has its own conditions, distance-based monthly amounts, a housing-contract or landlord-certificate file, and the same 30 June 2026 final application date for the 2025/2026 school year.
